Growing For Life: November

November was a time for wrapping up the summer garden, tucking some things in for winter, and harvesting a few nice things. Here are some highlights.

We had our best harvest of pomegranates to date. Not a ton, but still some nice ones from our Wonderful tree and our Sharp Velvet tree. The Sweet varietal still hasn’t given us any, probably due to it being in too shady of a location.

We had a really nice gift of pomegranates, apples and figs from our good friends Fred and Nichole. One of the best things about gardening is the community. We are sooo thankful for their gift as well as their friendship.

Our little Glen mango tree in a half wine barrel in the greenhouse gave us another few mangoes. Had to protect it from a critter that got to one of them – opossum is my guess. Used wire and netting around the fruits with success.

Got Camille and her good friends to get their hands in the soil in search for some sweet potatoes we started from cuttings of sweet potato greens from the local Asian grocery store.

They grew in clumps, which is probably why they grow this varietal for its greens and not the tubers! They are curing now and we’ll try to cook some up soon.

Mimi begrudgingly harvested some sunchokes. She doesn’t love them and says I usually let them rot in the fridge. But I’ll do a better job eating them this year, I promise! They grow like weeds in our clay soil.

That’s it for now. Thanks for reading!
