I just finished watching the amazing Dr. Michael Greger’s 2015 lecture on Food As Medicine. In the presentation (linked below) he takes a close look at some of the health conditions Americans fear most, and how they can be addressed by diet and lifestyle changes. Afraid of cancer (01:35)? You’re not alone. But the good news is that some of the most common and serious types are preventable in good part by choosing wisely what you put in your mouth. Concerned that you might have a heart attack like your mom or dad (20:49)? He shows how you can prevent and even reverse heart disease with diet instead of stents and bypass surgery. Worried that you are destined to get arthritis after a life of hard work, just like your parents or grandparents had (26:22)? Well, there are things that you can do to decrease the risk, and not just deal with the symptoms by taking a pain-killer every day. At the end of the presentation (56:22), he has a particularly interesting thought experiment comparing the tobacco industry with the modern standard American diet. Take a look, and tell me what you think.
